Built at the English Electric Works in Preston, ‘B for Bertie’ began as a standard Mk I automaton, no different to countless others rolling off the production line. Its true story, however, began during Operation Cavalier near Antwerp in June 1946.
Caught in a devastating ambush by Axis heavy Panzermechs, Bertie became separated from its unit in the chaos of battle. As British forces regrouped and the enemy withdrew, Bertie was listed among the lost. Yet, it had not been destroyed.
Damaged and low on power, Bertie slowly made its way back to the battlefield, only to find its detachment gone. Rather than shutting down, its primitive systems adapted in an unexpected way. Scavenging from fallen automatons, it replaced damaged parts, gathered power cells, and armed itself before setting off alone.
No longer just a factory-made unit, Bertie has become something entirely different. A lone survivor shaped by the battlefield itself, continuing its journey through the war with a purpose all its own.
